One of the important goals we set for ourselves this year is to learn how to take what we learn as a member of the W.A.F.F.L.E.S. and use it in other areas of our life, and vice versa. Our coach tells us she sees quite a difference in us when we are in waffle-mode, and when we are not. Some of the lessons we learn are kind of difficult, so if we can save ourselves from having to go through everything twice, once as a waffle and once not, life may be a bit easier.
Some of the W.A.F.F.L.E.S. have been recently been part of a Solar Sprint competition, where we have to build a homemade car that runs on solar power. The cars were made out of a array of things like balsa wood, Straws, Styrofoam, and fishing line just to name a few. In looking back we can now see that we didn’t take advantage of the many lessons we have learned from FIRST LEGO League. We didn’t have a strong plan to start out with and the plans we did have we didn’t stick to. We also should have focused more on team communications and productivity. Perhaps the biggest lesson we learned through Solar Sprint is that we really appreciate what our coaches do for the W.A.F.F.L.E.S. They help guide us by making sure we set deadlines, help keep us motivated and remind us to communicate with one another. I don’t think we really realized until now, just how much we appreciate them.
Here are some of the things we re-learned doing the Solar Sprint:
- Never give up
- Don’t start back from square one late in the game
- Communicate well
- Plan well ahead
- Make sure everyone is on the same page
- Nothing’s totally ever finished, you can always improve
Thankfully we did remember to put our core Values into use as we thanked everyone who organized the event and cheered other teams as they were racing. Our hard work also paid off as our Solar Sprint teams won the 1st place website award. We are proud of what we accomplished and hope that this whole experience comes in handy in the future.
