We were all exhausted and fighting off sore throats and colds, but that didn’t stop us from having a good day at the FLL tournament. We worked too hard all season not to enjoy ourselves. We had fun doing our research presentation and explaining our robot design and programs to the technical judges, but the most fun was had interacting with the other teams. There really are some great teams in Ontario! Our robot’s forklift began malfunctioning in our third run. We’ve never had this problem before and tried our best to fix it by changing out the motor and replacing some of the parts, but nothing worked. It was disappointing, but that’s how things go. We really thought that it meant bad news for our team, but our coach did her best to keep our minds busy and our spirits up. The other teams were really super supportive. We could hear many of them cheering for us as we ran our last run. It was really, really nice of them to be so encouraging. The day ended up with the awards ceremony. We hoped we would get something, but with FLL it is hard to tell how things will turn out because you don’t get to see how the other teams did in their interviews. We waited and hoped as the various awards were handed out. As the number of trophies left on the table dwindled we figured there was a real possiblity we were totally out of the running. The funny thing about FLL is that it is easy to be happy for the other teams, even if things don’t work out for your own. I guess it comes from knowing how much work they need to put in to receive these awards. It was nice to see so many of the teams we have come to know get presented with awards and we had fun cheering for them. In the end there was only one award was left, the 1st Place Champions award. You can’t begin to imagine our joy when we heard our team number and name announced. Wow! This is our third year with FLL and the first time we have had the honour of being named Provincial Champion. All that work – all that time – it WAS worth it!
